Radio Nepal (रेडियो नेपाल), operated by the Government of Nepal, was established on April 2, 1951. Initially, the station functioned for approximately four and a half hours daily, utilizing a 250-watt shortwave transmitter. Over the decades, Radio Nepal has significantly enhanced its institutional capabilities, diversifying its programming formats, improving technical efficiency, and expanding its coverage area.

The station broadcasts on both mid-wave and FM frequencies, providing 24-hour programming. Typically, about four hours of live content are scheduled between 14:15 hrs. and 18:00 hrs. In 1995, Radio Nepal inaugurated its first FM channel from Singh Durbar, Kathmandu—the first of its kind in the country—covering the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding regions.

The FM channel operates on 100 MHz using a 3 KW stereo transmitter installed at Khumaltar, Lalitpur. A modern studio with stereo capabilities has been established at Singh Durbar, along with a standby facility that supports live broadcasting. The station’s policy includes leasing airtime to private operators who can produce content with their own staff, which has gained popularity among Kathmandu's urban youth demographic.

In addition to its traditional broadcasting services, Radio Nepal has formed an exclusive strategic partnership with NITV (NEW IT VENTURE CORPORATION), a leading OTT/IPTV development and consulting firm based in Japan (www.newitventure.com). This collaboration aims to develop an advanced digital platform and manage global distribution through various online channels.
